Week 1

Streaming Gun Control Protest

NY Times reported that during a democratic sit-in dealing with gun control, several House members caught the drama on their smartphones. The public tuned into C-Span to see the event. Immediately, social media captured the public’s attention as news about the protest began to spread rapidly. Many turned to Twitter, which contained most of the protest drama as well as the pushback. Through the protest, word gets out and sparks more thought on gun control. Nowadays especially, people hold the ability to pick up these stories through television and social media.

This allows people to see the growing impact of social media. The vast majority get their news and information through different media sources. As NY Times states, “Now legacy and social media amplify each other… Television picks up on these stories — and the fact that the news makes the leap from social to mass media becomes part of the news in itself.” Clearly, media plays a great part in spreading the word around and with all the political news and events, many hold the ability to follow everything that happens while it happens.

Millennials Easily Influenced by Online Videos

This election season, research shows the major sway of the Millennial and Hispanic groups’ votes due to online videos and ads, Bulldog Reporter explains. Because they pay less attention to politics, it is of great importance to produce effective online videos that fit them. These videos easily influence both these groups and play a major part in their voting decisions.

The Internet is a popular place for this age group especially. It shows how easy people can be persuaded to vote one way or another by using online tools. With the election coming up, it will show how politicians are able to reach out through the Internet and persuade people to vote for them.
